Seven Sisters is a roadside picnic area gathered around seven red sandstone towers. It’s an easy stop to stretch your legs and see the rock up close; save your longer hiking time for one of Valley of Fire’s trails.
The park provides shade and restrooms at this day-use area. Visitors also repeatedly mention covered picnic tables, grills and convenient parking, making this a useful place to pause between longer stops. Bring the food you want for a picnic.
The towers are erosional remnants: surrounding sandstone wore away and left these larger masses exposed. Small hollows in the rock are signs that weathering continues. The formations are part of the park’s Jurassic Aztec Sandstone, about 150 million years old, which began as windblown sand across ancient dunes.
For a photo, include several towers with some sandy ground and desert plants at their bases. A tight crop of one rock loses the way the formations read as a group.
