Rainbow Vista

Rainbow Vista is a roadside overlook on White Domes Road, where the pavement crests a low ridge and opens north onto a broad basin of multicolored rock. The signed turnout puts the panorama right at hand, so it makes a good stop even when a hike is not in your plans. From the ridge, the lighter pink and cream formations stand out against the park’s deeper reds.

A separate sandy route starts from the same area and continues toward Fire Canyon, including a dryfall overlook. That is a different outing from the roadside vista. Loose, deep sand makes the walk more tiring than the open terrain suggests, and there is no water along it; if you take the route, carry your own water and plan around the heat. The view from the turnout does not require the hike.

The ridge gives you a panorama rather than one single rock. Look north across the layers, and include a little of the near ridge in a photo so the spread of formations does not flatten into a single band.

The ridges, domes, and valleys around Rainbow Vista were carved from sand deposited about 150 million years ago. Across the park, red Jurassic Aztec sandstone sits alongside gray and tan limestone; at this overlook, those changing colors fill the view and explain the name.
