Hiking Balancing Rock Trail
A quick stop, not a big hikeBalancing Rock Trail is a 0.
Balancing Rock Trail is a 0.25-mile out-and-back from the Visitor Center parking area to the formation and back. Allow about 15 minutes. The path heads west over small rises and dips across red-orange desert ground. It’s a quick add-on if you want to see the rock; if you’re looking for a longer walk, choose another trail.
The formation at the endAt about an eighth of a mile, the path ends just below the roughly 20-foot sandstone stack.
At about an eighth of a mile, the path ends just below the roughly 20-foot sandstone stack. Its projecting top block hangs over pitted lower layers, with an eye-like opening in the rock. Return the same way. From the path’s end, look up to fit the top block and the full stack in one view. The opposite-side view from White Domes Road is a separate roadside stop, not part of this walk.

The park’s red sandstone began as windblown dunes about 150 million years ago, then kept changing under wind and water. Look from the trail; don’t climb the formation. Desert heat can be dangerous even on a short walk, and Valley of Fire closes to visitors each year from December 1 through 14 for maintenance.
