Fire Canyon Overlook is the drop-off viewpoint at the end of the southern side route from Rainbow Vista Trail. It looks into the beginning of Fire Canyon, with broken red sandstone rising around the rim. I’d add it if you want a short walk away from the road and a more enclosed canyon view; the separate road-end Fire Canyon / Silica Dome pullout is a different stop. From the Rainbow Vista parking area, plan around an hour. Published route lengths vary from about 1 to 1.3 miles for the loop and overlook spur.

The walk inThe trail starts at a signed parking area on Mouse’s Tank Road, about 1.

The trail starts at a signed parking area on Mouse’s Tank Road, about 1.7 miles north of the Visitor Center. It passes colorful formations, then narrows into a red canyon before the overlook. Expect soft sand and uneven rock; the short distance can feel harder than the mileage suggests. There’s no water along the route, and much of the walk is exposed, so hot weather makes this a poor time to go.

At the endThe viewpoint finishes at an abrupt rock drop above Fire Canyon.

The viewpoint finishes at an abrupt rock drop above Fire Canyon. From there, the canyon’s close, broken walls give the view its shape. Include the rounded sandstone boulder near the edge with the canyon beyond it to show the scale of the drop.

The red sandstoneThe red rock is part of Valley of Fire’s Jurassic-age Aztec Sandstone.

The red rock is part of Valley of Fire’s Jurassic-age Aztec Sandstone. The state park describes it as windblown sand left after inland seas receded and the land rose. That gives the canyon its vivid color and the layered, fractured walls you see from the rim.
