Getting There & Logistics

There’s no official trailhead or signage—this is an unmarked route in Kaolin Wash. Use designated parking (commonly the Fire Wave area/Parking Lot #3 or White Domes Trailhead) and walk in from the road; roadside parking is not allowed and is actively enforced. Expect no facilities at the canyon itself; the nearest restrooms are at White Domes Trailhead. A day-use fee is required to enter the park.

Best Time to Visit

Aim for early morning or late afternoon when the pastel tones glow and parking is easier. Midday can be harsh, hot, and less photogenic. Weekdays see fewer people than weekends.

Geology

The canyon is carved into Jurassic Aztec sandstone by water and wind. Subtle shifts in mineral content and weathering produce the signature pinks, oranges, and creams—hence the “Pastel” moniker.

This is an exposed wash: carry plenty of water, sun protection, and sturdy shoes. Avoid the wash during storms—flash flooding is possible. You might spot typical desert life like lizards or small birds, but the slot’s size and foot traffic mean wildlife sightings are hit-or-miss.
