Valley of Fire Visitor Center

This 16,500-square-foot visitor center sits near the Atlatl Rock and Arch Rock campground area. It is a useful first stop: the exhibits and short orientation film give context before you head out to the formations. Check your map pin: the newer center opened in 2025, while the Old Visitor Center is a separate site farther east.

Exhibits cover the park and surrounding region’s geology, ecology, prehistory and history. The opening program introduced a ten-minute orientation film narrated by William Shatner. The shop sells books, postcards and souvenirs, and public restrooms are available. Pets are not allowed inside; service animals are permitted.

A long, curving wall of stratified concrete leads into a slot-canyon-like sequence before the exhibit spaces. Its layered bands take their cue from the surrounding rock, so the building itself starts the geology lesson. Outside, a 200-seat amphitheater carries the center’s interpretive role into the open desert.

The park’s red Aztec sandstone formed from windblown dunes in the Jurassic, about 150 million years ago. The bands that inspired the center’s wall are part of the same landscape you will see on the park roads. The exhibits put that geology alongside the valley’s ecology and human history.

The park preserves petrified wood and rock carvings. State interpretation dates prominent Basketmaker petroglyphs here to roughly 2,500 years ago, while evidence of people in southern Nevada reaches back about 11,000 years. The center is a useful place to get that regional timeline before visiting individual sites.

The present building opened in November 2025. Its predecessor struggled to serve a park drawing more than 700,000 visitors a year, so this larger facility was designed as the start of the park experience, with exhibits, a theater, a shop and outdoor gathering space in one stop.
