Why camp here

Atlatl Rock Campground is the park’s showpiece: tucked into flame‑red Aztec sandstone with sweeping desert views and starry, quiet nights. You’re a short stroll from famous petroglyphs at Atlatl Rock (reached via a staircase and viewing platform), and a quick drive from Arch Rock, the Beehives, and other marquee stops.

Campsites and amenities

There are 44 sites spread among sculpted rock nooks, which adds privacy and wind protection in spots. About half the sites offer water and electric hookups, including several big pull‑throughs for RVs. Every site has a picnic table (most with shade), a fire ring and grill, and nearby drinking water. Restrooms have flush toilets and hot showers, and there’s an RV dump station at the campground. A few tent sites are walk‑ins with short gear hauls.

What makes it different

This is the most developed base in the park: hookups, real showers, and easy access to the petroglyphs set it apart. Evenings cool down to perfect campfire weather, and the dark skies make this a legit stargazing spot.

Wildlife

Desert bighorn sheep wander through regularly—keep your eyes on the ridgelines in the afternoon. You may also spot foxes, lizards, and a mix of desert birds around camp. Give animals space and store food securely.

Heat, connectivity, and other realities

Summer heat is no joke—rock and sand radiate it back at you—so plan activities for mornings and late afternoons and hydrate constantly. Cell service is unreliable to nonexistent; some campers buy the park’s Wi‑Fi for a day if they need to check in. Generators aren’t allowed here, so plan your power accordingly.

Best time to visit

Cooler months are prime (and busiest). Aim for weekdays and arrive earlier in the day to snag a site, especially in spring. For photography, sunrise and late‑day golden light set the red rock ablaze; stay after dusk for Milky Way views on moonless nights.
