Atlatl Rock Campground is a developed campground for tents and RVs inside Valley of Fire State Park, with red sandstone rising close behind the sites. It makes sense if you want to stay in the park and wake up among the rocks instead of driving back out after a day visit.
There are walk-in tent sites and RV spaces, with water and power hookups at some sites. Some tent spots require carrying gear from nearby parking, and privacy varies across the campground. Check the details of the site you choose; not every space feels secluded or suits the same setup.
Facilities include shaded tables, grills, water and restrooms at campsites, plus showers and an RV dump station; power hookups are available at some sites. Bring your own camp meals: no food service is identified at the campground.
Desert bighorn sheep are sometimes spotted among the rocks around the campground. Campers report seeing them nearby, but sightings are not guaranteed, so count one as a lucky bonus.
Atlatl Rock is a separate nearby stop, named for the spear-throwing tool depicted among centuries-old rock writings. The red Aztec sandstone around camp began as shifting sand dunes about 150 million years ago, so the rock wall beside the sites belongs to the same ancient landscape that gives the park its character.
