Hiking Duck Rock Viewpoint

The short versionDuck Rock Viewpoint is an informal 1.

Duck Rock Viewpoint is an informal 1.4-mile out-and-back from the gated spur off White Domes Road near the north end of the drive. Follow an old dirt track for about half a mile, then head right across open desert to a red sandstone formation whose silhouette resembles a duck’s head. Allow about 45 minutes; the last part is pathless and more demanding than the short mileage suggests.

Access and footingThis isn’t a signed, maintained trail, and the final route isn’t marked.

This isn’t a signed, maintained trail, and the final route isn’t marked. The approach leaves the old road on the right and drops down a steep, crumbly slope toward the rock. It’s easy to miss the profile from the pullout; don’t descend if the loose footing is beyond your comfort.

Current self-guided walk-in permission and whether parking at the gate is designated weren’t confirmed. The park says to park only in designated roadside places, so ask a ranger where you may park and walk in, and leave the gate clear. High-heat hiking is dangerous here even on a short walk. Dogs are allowed on a leash no longer than six feet. White Domes has shade and restrooms, but that’s a separate stop; no water or restroom is listed at this pullout.

The head-like rock sits above a broad, layered red sandstone body. The park’s red Aztec sandstone is Jurassic-age dune sand, now weathered into the ledges and rounded forms around Duck Rock. The formation can blend into the surrounding red rock from the pullout, so only go closer if you’re comfortable with the loose slope. Frame the profile with nearby sandstone to make its shape easier to read.

A separate, longer ranger-led off-trail circuit covers several petroglyph panels before passing Duck Rock; published versions are about 4 to 4.5 miles. Those panels and that rougher canyon route aren’t part of this short viewpoint walk.
