Lipoa Point

Overview

Lipoa Point is a quiet headland stop on the West Maui Scenic Drive with sweeping ocean vistas and a short coastal walk. It’s the kind of low-key spot locals love—nothing fancy, just wind, waves, and room to breathe.

The Walk

Expect a simple out-and-back of about 1.9 miles/3.1 km with roughly 170 ft/52 m of gain. Most people take 30–60 minutes. The path exists but isn’t always obvious, and brush can encroach, so long pants aren’t a bad idea. Dogs are allowed on leash and it’s open year‑round.

What You’ll See

Wide-angle views of Maui’s northwest coastline and a front-row seat to surfer watching when the swell is up. In winter, keep scanning the horizon—visitors frequently report whale activity offshore, especially around March. After dark, the area can be rewarding for stargazing if skies are clear.

Logistics

There are no amenities at Lipoa Point—no water, trash cans, or restrooms. Parking is in small roadside/dirt pullouts that can be pitted with potholes; drive slowly and don’t block others. If you need facilities, head to D.T. Fleming Beach Park (full services) or the second parking area for Honolua Bay (portapotties). Cell service is spotty; download an offline map before you go and avoid leaving valuables in your car.

Safety Notes

Stay well back from cliff edges and be extra cautious near the water—conditions can be deceptively rough, and swimming is risky when seas are up. The road beyond Kapalua grows narrow and winding; many drivers choose to avoid that stretch in the dark.

Best Time to Visit

Mornings bring a mellow vibe and easier parking. Winter months add a chance of whale sightings, while clear evenings can deliver great stars if you’re prepared with lights and bug spray.
