Access and equipment

Wide entrances and room to maneuver make the inside accessible to strollers and wheelchair users, and one information booth is designed for wheelchair access. The upgraded centre area includes accessible toilets with changing facilities. Free hire of a motorised TrailRider and beach wheelchairs is available through the centre; ask about booking before you need them. Mobile-device charging stations are outside. The sealed visitor-centre carpark is opposite the building, so you must cross Main Road to reach the entrance. Two designated accessible parking bays are the closest spaces to the centre.

Tidal River Visitor Centre is the main visitor-information hub at Wilsons Promontory National Park, on Ring Road beside the main campground and accommodation area at Tidal River. Staff handle park questions, provide maps and local advice, help with accommodation bookings, and assist with permits for overnight hikes. If you have a day walk in mind, ask for a map and route advice before setting off; if you are planning an overnight walk, this is the place to ask about the permit process. The centre is about a 30-minute drive south of the park entrance, so it is a practical pause after the long road through the park rather than a scenic stop in its own right.

Inside, an interpretive display tells stories about the park's history and natural values, and digital information kiosks offer another way to orient yourself. The 2026 extension refreshed the building and its interior and improved paths around the centre. That background helps connect the park's natural values and history with the beaches and walks visitors are weighing up. The display gives broad context for the landscape around Tidal River; follow it with specific questions at the staff desk if you need to work out how a beach visit, day walk or overnight hike fits together. This combines the map-and-permit stop with an introduction to the place you're visiting, all before you set out from the park's main camping area.

During peak periods, the free shuttle between Tidal River and Telegraph Saddle uses the visitor-centre carpark as one of its stops. When the service is running, Telegraph Saddle carpark is closed to private vehicles, so leave your car here if you are heading to the saddle for a walk. Next door, the Tidal River General Store is a separate building; it sells groceries and emergency supplies, souvenirs, gas refills, and hot and cold food. Picnic tables and barbecues are also listed in the visitor-centre area, making it easy to combine a map stop with a meal or pick up provisions before heading farther into the park.
