Beryl Spring is a hot spring beside the Gibbon River, at a pullout between Norris and Madison. A short boardwalk brings you close to its blue-green pool and active vent, so a few minutes is enough. Stop if you want to hear a spring at work; skip a detour if you're trying to fit in bigger attractions.
Look for blue-green water against pale mineral deposits, and listen for the spring's forceful bubbling and hiss. The sulfur smell can be strong, and steam sometimes hides the pool, especially in cooler air. The 1883 U.S. Geological Survey Hague party named it for a color that reminded them of beryl, a blue-green gemstone.
For a clearer look at the pool's color, mid-afternoon after the air warms is a reasonable bet; cooler conditions can make a stronger plume but obscure the water. From the boardwalk, keep the pale mineral rim in the frame, or include the Gibbon River across the road for a wider view. The Madison-to-Norris road closes to regular vehicles seasonally, so check current road status before planning a winter visit.
