Hiking Solfatara Creek Trail

What this hike isSolfatara Creek Trail is a 6.

Solfatara Creek Trail is a 6.3-mile one-way point-to-point hike between Norris Campground and Solfatara North Trailhead. It follows creek corridors through lodgepole forest and meadows, then climbs into a landscape of thermal basins near Lemonade Creek. Allow about three to four hours one way. The trail is moderate, but the logistics take planning: arrange a pickup or a second vehicle, or hike roughly 12.6 miles to return to your start.

Starting at Norris Campground, the path follows grassy creekside corridors through forest and open valley. Near Whiterock Springs, small bubbling pools and mineral colors break up the trees; pieces of obsidian also occur along this stretch. The surrounding pale ground can look inviting, but stay on the established path wherever the route passes thermal features.

Farther north, the trail crosses meadows and a cleared power-line corridor. That open strip is the least scenic part of the walk, though it gives a change from the enclosed forest and marks the approach to the high ground.

Near the north end, the route crosses warm Lemonade Creek and climbs about 400 feet in roughly half a mile out of the ravine. From the slope, look toward Amphitheater Springs and Mount Holmes. The springs have sulfur-lined channels, pools, and mud pots; the best view is from the trail, so do not leave it to get closer.

The pale hillside, dark pines, and distant peaks make the strongest view of the hike. They are worth a pause before the last stretch to the north trailhead.

The south access is Solfatara Creek Trailhead (4K1), beside the Norris Campground entrance and near restrooms. The north end is Solfatara North Trailhead (1K7), where parking is limited to small pullouts. Arrange your ride before starting. Without a pickup, retrace the same trail for about 12.6 miles total. Carry water for the full walk; no potable water source is marked along the route.
