Undine Falls is a 60-foot waterfall on Lava Creek in northern Yellowstone, dropping in three plunges. The roadside viewpoint is close enough to make this a quick stop rather than a hike. It sits on the North Entrance–Northeast Entrance road, the park route generally open year-round to regular vehicles, so it can fit into a northern Yellowstone drive in any season.
From the overlook, the water steps down through three rocky ledges into the creek. It’s worth framing the full cascade in one shot so the upper fall, lower drops and wooded gorge all read together.
Geologist Arnold Hague is credited with naming the falls Undine in 1885, after water spirits in German mythology. Older names include East Gardner Falls and Cascade Falls of the East Gardiner. The name also appears in Yellowstone geology: a basalt unit was named for the falls.
