Trail guide
This is an out-and-back to the Cotter Force waterfall viewpoint: 500 metres each way, so 0.62 miles (1 km) total round trip. It is a signed accessible route, graded green and described as a route for all, and it is short and easy underfoot.
Start from the A684 lay-by in Cotterdale, just after you cross the River Ure on the narrow bridge (around grid reference SD850915). From there a specially graded path runs up the valley for about 480 metres of connected footway to the falls viewpoint near SD848919. You turn around at the waterfall and walk back the same way, which is the whole route.
The falls are a set of about six gentle cascades stepping down through woodland, with the tallest drop around 1.5 metres. It is a wide, tiered curtain of water rather than one big plunge, and it rewards standing still for a few minutes. A bench near the falls gives you somewhere to sit and take it in. The path surface is gravel throughout.
The route is a designated public footpath and is recorded as wheelchair accessible, and the graded surface suits pushchairs too. Be clear on the scope: it is the section up to the waterfall that is wheelchair friendly, and this walk ends at the falls rather than continuing further up the valley. Parking is the roadside lay-by on the A684 described above, so take care getting in and out beside a main road. Dogs are welcome on the right of way, kept on a lead at all times, on a short lead from 1 March to 31 July, and under close control around livestock and wildlife.
Allow around 30 minutes for the round trip, more if you sit at the bench and watch the water for a while. The honest tradeoff: this is very short and easy underfoot, but the interest is concentrated at the waterfall itself rather than spread across a long, varied hike. Treat it as a focused stop and it delivers well. The cascades sit in woodland, so soft, even light suits photographs better than hard overhead sun.
