The Yosemite Conservation Heritage Center is a Sierra Club-operated public education center in a rough-granite lodge in Yosemite Valley, across from Housekeeping Camp. Come in for history exhibits, a Yosemite and Sierra Nevada reference library, and a children’s corner; it’s a worthwhile stop if you’re interested in how Yosemite was protected. The center usually operates in the May-to-September season, so check the current Yosemite Guide before planning around the doors.

The lodge is across Southside Drive from Housekeeping Camp, at Yosemite Valley shuttle stop #12, and bicycle parking is available. The building isn’t wheelchair accessible: eight stone steps without handrails lead to the entrance, with two more steps down to the lower library. Plan around those stairs if you can’t use them.

The Sierra Club built the lodge in 1903–04 as a memorial to geologist Joseph LeConte; it was dedicated on July 3, 1904. Berkeley architect John White used rough-hewn granite and a steep shingled roof to echo the color, texture, and vertical lines of Yosemite Valley’s cliffs. The lodge first stood at Camp Curry, then moved to its current site in 1919.

A reading room grew into a conservation centerThe Sierra Club’s Yosemite work started before this building.

The Sierra Club’s Yosemite work started before this building. In 1898, the club opened a public reading room with books, maps, photographs, and a herbarium. Its campaigning later helped bring Yosemite Valley into the national park in 1906, a story the center continues through its exhibits and reference library.

In 2016, at the Sierra Club’s request, the NPS renamed the building Yosemite Conservation Heritage Center because LeConte promoted racist theories. The exhibits now tell a wider story of the people and ideas behind Yosemite’s protection, alongside the club’s later conservation work.

Look back from the porchThe lodge’s stone walls and steep roof make the building itself the main photo.

The lodge’s stone walls and steep roof make the building itself the main photo. Stand back far enough to fit the whole front in the frame; from the porch, look toward Half Dome and Yosemite Falls for the valley setting.
