Compass Harbor Trail

Compass Harbor Trail is an easy 0.8-mile loop from the small Route 3 lot to a rocky stretch of Frenchman Bay, then inland past the remains of George B. Dorr’s estate before returning to the same trailhead. Allow 30–45 minutes. It’s a good short walk when you want both coastline and a bit of Acadia history without taking on a mountain climb. At the first junction, take the left branch for the full shore loop; going straight gives a more level approach to the historic site but skips the shoreline circuit.

The first 0.1 mile is a relatively flat, wide path through the woods. Farther in, roots and rocks become more common and the slope increases. The shore is uneven granite, and about 20 large stone steps stand near the historic site. The full loop isn’t uniformly accessible; the straighter route from the first junction is the more level option. Wet shoreline rocks can be slippery, so take care along the water.

The walk passes the remains of Old Farm, George B. Dorr’s former home. Dorr helped establish Acadia and became its first superintendent. Look for the cottage foundation, stone steps that once led toward the ocean, the remains of a saltwater pool, and traces of gardens and apple trees. The site is protected, so leave both natural and historic features where they are.

The rocky coast opens onto Frenchman Bay, with Ironbound Island as a landmark across the water. The exposed granite makes a useful foreground if you’re taking a picture; include the island to place the view. Once you reach the shore, the loop turns back through the woods toward the estate remains.

The small dirt lot is on the left side of ME Route 3, about a mile south of downtown Bar Harbor. It can fill on busy weekends. There’s no restroom or public transportation at the trailhead. An Acadia entrance pass is required year-round, though the hike has no separate activity fee or reservation requirement. Dogs are allowed on a leash no longer than six feet.
