Hardwood Lookout

Hardwood Lookout is the viewpoint at the end of a 1 km loop through Algonquin’s hardwood forest. It’s a good Highway 60 stop if you want to get out and walk rather than pull over for another quick look. Allow about 30 to 60 minutes; the payoff is a compact opening over Smoke Lake and the surrounding hills, not a wide, exposed summit panorama.

The loop is rated moderate, and the forest path has roots and rocks with a short, steeper rise near the lookout. Parking is at the access around km 13.8 of Highway 60, and a valid Algonquin Park permit is required for trail use. Two benches by the viewpoint make it easy to pause. The rooted, rocky surface and grade make this a poor choice for a stroller or anyone needing a smooth, step-free path.

Smoke Lake sits below the wooded slopes, with a peninsula reaching into the water and hills beyond. For a photo, keep the peninsula and far ridge in the frame; a little foreground foliage shows you’re looking out from within the hardwoods. Trees frame the opening, so expect an intimate lake view rather than a completely unobstructed panorama.

The trail’s theme is the ecology of a typical Algonquin hardwood forest. A numbered guide has been used to explain the trees and forest composition; if one is available, follow its stops instead of treating this as a climb-only walk.

A historical cairn is dedicated to Douglas McDonald Hains. The story behind his commemoration isn’t established in the trail information, so the name is a small detail to notice rather than a full history.
