Overview
This is a compact 1 km/0.6 mile loop through classic Algonquin hardwood forest that climbs to a rocky lookout above Smoke Lake. Expect a short but steady workout with roots and a few steep pitches—about 278 ft of gain—before you pop out at the viewpoint. There’s a commemorative cairn and a bench at the top, making it an easy place to linger.
What you’ll see
The trail is an interpretive loop focused on Algonquin’s hardwood ecology, with numbered posts and an optional pamphlet at the start. In fall, maples bring reliable color, and tamaracks turn golden from mid to late October. Summer foliage can partially frame (and sometimes block) the view, but the forest itself is lovely year‑round.
Route notes
Park at km 13.8 on Highway 60; the lot is shared with the Red Spruce Side Trail. The loop is well marked and can be done either direction. Counter‑clockwise gives a steadier climb; clockwise reaches the lookout sooner. Some visitors shortcut from the signed exit to hit the viewpoint fast, but the full loop is the better experience. Plan 30–60 minutes, depending on photo stops.
Best time to hike
Go early or late for softer light and fewer people—midday, especially on weekends and during fall color season, draws the most traffic. Winter works too: this is a quick, popular snowshoe outing if the trail is packed.
Know before you go
Footing is uneven with roots and occasional slick spots, and there are drop‑offs near the lookout—keep kids close. Not stroller or wheelchair friendly. Bugs can be fierce in June; bring repellent. Dogs are allowed; keep them leashed and under control. A valid Algonquin Park day‑use permit is required to stop and hike from the trailhead.
