Goat Pass Hut

Overview

Perched around 1,063 m, Goat Pass Hut is a no-frills, 20‑bunk standard hut that does exactly what you want up here: provide solid shelter on the Mingha–Deception Route. Expect two bunk rooms with mattresses, a toilet, and a roof‑fed rainwater tank. There’s no fireplace, so think warmth from your layers and sleeping bag, not from a hearth.

Why it’s worth the effort

This hut sits right where many trampers need a breather, including Te Araroa walkers. The Deception and Mingha valleys are also used for the annual Coast to Coast endurance race, so you’re bedding down in a spot that’s legendary with hardy locals. In foul weather this country can be unforgiving, and the hut is a welcome refuge when conditions turn.

Getting there

Access is on foot via the Mingha–Deception Route in Arthur’s Pass National Park. The hut’s mapped on NZTopo50 BV20 with NZTM coordinates E1487726, N5249171, and sits at about 1,063 m.

Fees and passes

As a Department of Conservation Standard Hut, fees are per night: Adults NZ$10; Youth (5–17) NZ$5; 0–4 free. Pay with Standard Hut Tickets via the honesty box or use a Backcountry Hut Pass. Te Araroa walkers should register and get the Te Araroa Trail Pass.

History footnote

Built in 1974, the hut received a porch‑decking refresh in February 2018 thanks to volunteers, a nice touch that makes wet entries a little less miserable.

Best time to visit

Aim for settled weather windows. Arrive earlier in the afternoon to improve your bunk odds, especially when Te Araroa foot traffic is passing through or around the Coast to Coast race period.
