A quick pullout around milepost 302 on the Parkway, Boulder Field Overlook is exactly what it sounds like: a viewpoint over a mountainside strewn with rockfall. It’s a handy stop near Grandfather Mountain with a surprisingly good angle toward the Linn Cove Viaduct and the big ridges beyond.
Parking is a small pullout that fills fast in summer and peak fall color. There are no restrooms, water, or picnic tables—bring what you need and pack it out.
Expect the usual Parkway regulars—songbirds, squirrels, and the occasional deer—most active early and late in the day.
Late afternoon to sunset brings the most flattering light on the viaduct and ridgelines. Weekdays are quieter; arrive early during peak foliage or summer weekends to snag a spot.
