What to expect

This is a tiny, nearly level loop right off the parking area at Cold Prong Pond Overlook (Milepost 299). It’s about 0.3 miles total (a true loop), with only a slight climb back up to the lot. Think easy forest walk and a grassy, weedy opening with a small stream—despite the name, you may not see a true pond. Wildflowers can add color in spring and summer.

Who it’s for

Perfect if you want a short, flat leg-stretcher between Parkway stops or you’re easing into the day. It’s also a handy add-on if you’re hopping onto the nearby Tanawha Trail; start here, loop the meadow, then continue onto a longer trek for something more scenic.

Trail character and conditions

The path is a basic forest footpath that can be brushy and, at times, overgrown. Expect minimal views and modest scenery; the draw is the easy movement, the small stream, and seasonal flowers. Reports note periods of poor maintenance in the past, with improvement at times, but it can still feel underwhelming if you’re chasing big vistas.

Best time to hike

Spring and summer are your best bet for wildflowers and a bit more visual interest. It’s open year-round, but fall and winter are less compelling, and the “pond” may not be present outside wet periods. For a quieter loop and cooler temps, go early or late in the day.

Tips

  • Manage expectations: the name oversells the water feature. Think meadow clearing, not a photogenic pond.
  • Use this as a warm-up or a family-friendly stop, or combine it with a segment of the Tanawha Trail for a more rewarding outing.
  • If the loop looks overgrown, simply treat it as a quick stretch and save your energy for Tanawha.

Pros

  • Easy add-on to the adjacent Tanawha Trail for a longer, better hike.
  • Seasonal wildflowers brighten an otherwise plain loop.

Cons

  • Often overgrown; maintenance can be spotty.
  • The “pond” may be a weedy clearing—expect underwhelming scenery.

Parking

Park at Cold Prong Pond Overlook (MP 299) on the Parkway; the loop starts at the edge of the lot.

Caution

Brushy, overgrown sections and wet footing near the small stream; don’t expect a true pond.
