Linn Cove Viaduct Overlook

From the short paved path (starting at the Linn Cove Visitor Center parking area), the view is of the viaduct from below and the rugged forested flank of Grandfather Mountain. It’s dramatic and very different from the wide mountain panoramas elsewhere on the drive.

The famous look-back view of the entire curve isn’t from the main overlook. You have two solid options:

• Hike the Tanawha Trail south from the visitor center area for about a mile round-trip to rocky outcrops with that postcard angle.
• Or drive roughly a mile north on the Parkway to overlooks that look back at the bridge.

The Tanawha Trail passes under and beside the viaduct and continues toward Beacon Heights and Price Lake. Expect rocky, sometimes muddy footing beyond the paved section.

This was the final section of the Blue Ridge Parkway, completed in 1987 after decades of design debate. Precast concrete segments were installed from above to protect the fragile slopes—why the bridge appears to “hug” the mountain so gently. You’re on the biodiverse slopes of Grandfather Mountain, with Appalachian hardwood forest, rock outcrops, and habitats that support deer, wild turkey, and songbirds along the trail. Wildlife sightings around the overlook are hit-or-miss—listen for birds and scan edges at dawn or dusk.

• The visitor center is seasonal; don’t count on facilities year-round, and there’s no food service here.
• Trails beyond the paved path can be slick after rain—pack shoes with traction and go slow on rocks.
• You can’t meaningfully stop on the viaduct itself; use designated pullouts and overlooks.
