Look for the pale, upright trunks scattered across the slopes: these are the long-dead “ghosts” of American chestnut trees, a stark reminder of the blight that reshaped Appalachian forests in the early 1900s. It’s one of the easier places to see this ecological history written on the landscape.
You’re in mixed hardwood forest country—keep an eye and ear out for songbirds and soaring hawks. Deer are common in the vicinity, and the broader area occasionally hosts black bears; scan the edges of the forested slopes with binoculars.
