Flat Laurel Creek Trail

Flat Laurel Creek is a 3.7-mile point-to-point walk between the trailhead off NC 215 and the Forest Service parking area at the end of Black Balsam Road. Allow about 3 to 3.5 hours one way. Without a shuttle, plan to turn around and walk the same corridor back, making the outing roughly 7.3 miles.

The route moves through open high-country meadows, spruce pockets, and the Flat Laurel Creek corridor, with cascades and views toward Sam Knob along the way. The old roadbed makes the direction easy to follow in places, but the creekside sections feel rougher and more wooded. Look for Wildcat Falls and the small pools and cascades near the path.

Rocky and muddy footing, boggy stretches, and several creek crossings can turn a comfortable day into a slow one after rain. Waterproof footwear and trekking poles are sensible. High-elevation weather changes quickly, and winter closures can affect the Blue Ridge Parkway and FS 816.

The NC 215 trailhead has limited parking, while the route finishes near the larger Forest Service lot at the end of Black Balsam Road. Arrange a shuttle if you want to walk one way; otherwise, the out-and-back return is the straightforward plan. For photos, frame the creek or a cascade with the surrounding meadow, then look back toward Sam Knob for the broader high-country view.
