Overview
A classic Parkway pull-off with extra payoff, Pounding Mill Overlook (MP 413.2) delivers wide-open layers of Blue Ridge ridgelines and a clear sightline to the bald face of Looking Glass Rock. It’s easy to reach, quick to enjoy, and regularly called out as a top sunrise stop.
What You’ll See
- South: the unmistakable dome of Looking Glass Rock.
- North: on clear days, Pisgah Inn and Frying Pan Fire Tower, plus the Parkway ribboning across the ridges.
- Straight ahead: those endless, blue-stacked mountains you came for.
Two Angles in One Stop
There are essentially two vantage points within the same overlook. Wander to the south end of the parking area for an alternate composition that echoes nearby viewpoints, with Looking Glass Rock anchoring both angles. It’s an easy way to double your photos without adding drive time.
Name & Backstory
The name nods to historic, water-powered “pounding mills” once used by settlers to crush corn along local streams. Look for interpretive signage that adds a little context to the views.

- Late afternoon and sunset can also be lovely when conditions are clear.

While sightings aren’t guaranteed at the overlook itself, the surrounding Pisgah National Forest hosts deer, turkeys, songbirds, and occasionally black bears—binoculars can make your stop more interesting between color shows.
