Tucked beside its namesake creek at milepost ~60.9, Otter Creek Campground is the Parkway’s low-elevation hideout (about 649 feet). Expect a lusher, warmer river corridor than the high ridges—more water, more greenery, and the soothing soundtrack of the creek. It’s a simple, rustic basecamp with a peaceful vibe and notably good night skies.
Campsites & Facilities
You’ll find a mix of tent and RV sites, with a split between reservable (39) and first‑come, first‑served (29). Each site has a picnic table, grill, and lantern post. Amenities include flush toilets, potable water spigots, and an RV dump station. There are no hookups and no showers. Firewood is typically available on site, and trash disposal is provided. Most sites allow one vehicle; a few allow two.
Trails & Things To Do
Trails fan out right from camp. The Otter Creek Trail follows the waterway, the Otter Lake Loop circles the nearby lake, the Trail of Trees offers a short interpretive walk, and the James River Canal Trail links to canal history and the James River Visitor Center—where a restored canal lock is a short stroll away. Anglers will appreciate nearby Otter Lake, which is managed for warm‑water species.
Nature & Wildlife
Down here by the James River, the Parkway’s low, water-rich habitat supports different plants and animals than the high peaks. Look for deer, songbirds, and creekside life around Otter Creek and Otter Lake. Clear nights can be excellent for stargazing thanks to the quiet valley setting.
