Otter Creek Trail

If you’re craving an easy, quiet stretch of woods-and-water hiking, this 3.5-mile one-way path delivers. Otter Creek Trail parallels the Blue Ridge Parkway between Otter Creek Campground and the James River Visitor Center, following the clear, cool waters of Otter Creek through the river valley. Most sections are easy to hike, but the natural ground surface, roots, rocks, bridges, and occasional crossings are not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. The trail can also be reached from Parkway overlooks at mileposts 61.4, 62.5, and 63.1, so hikers can sample a section or arrange a shorter outing.

This is a point-to-point route from the campground access to the James River Visitor Center. The full published distance is 3.5 miles one way; arrange a shuttle or plan to return along the same corridor if you need to finish at the starting point. The adjacent Otter Lake Loop and the separate Canal Lock Trail are optional nearby walks, not part of this trail’s stored line. At the James River end, the 0.4-mile Canal Lock Trail crosses beneath the bridge to the restored Battery Creek Lock.

The creekside setting supports varied river-valley plant and animal communities, with good opportunities for wildlife and bird observation. Parking is available at Otter Creek Campground and the James River Visitor Center, with additional access from the Parkway overlooks. Campground facilities include restrooms and drinking water when open; the visitor-center area provides parking and a seasonal restroom. The natural tread can be muddy or slick after rain, and winter conditions may include ice. Leashed pets are allowed on Parkway trails; keep them under control and follow posted park rules.
