This is a quick 0.9-mile loop circling Otter Lake along the Blue Ridge Parkway’s James River/Otter Creek corridor. Come for an easy-to-moderate stretch-your-legs walk in mature forest, not big lake panoramas—most of the loop is wooded, with the clearest water views near the dam and the short shoreline sections (National Park Service, National Park Planner).

Trail guide
From the Otter Lake Overlook parking area, follow the signed access toward the dam and cross Otter Creek at the designated stepping-stone/bridge crossing before taking the loop. The route has a short, steep, rocky climb with roots, then descends toward the lake and completes the wooded loop. Total hiking time is roughly 45 minutes for most walkers (National Park Service, National Park Planner).
You’ll travel under a closed forest canopy with glimpses of Otter Lake and better looks where the trail reaches the shore or crosses near the dam. The area is known for wildlife activity, especially around water; beaver lodges and dams may be visible, and early morning or late evening are good times for wildlife observation (National Park Service).
This loop sits in a cluster of short paths in the same corridor, so it can be combined with the Otter Creek Trail or the short Trail of Trees and James River Canal trails for a longer outing without much driving (National Park Service, CNY Hiking).
