James River Canal Lock Trail

Start at the James River Visitor Center at Milepost 63.6 and follow the sidewalk to the pedestrian walkway beneath the Blue Ridge Parkway bridge. Cross the James River, descend the 39 stairs on the south side, and follow the Canal Locks Trail along the canal towpath and prism to Battery Creek Lock #7. Wayside exhibits explain the lock, waste weir, and slackwater connection. Return to the visitor center by the same route; the stored line represents this physical corridor once.

The James River and Kanawha Canal operated from the 1800s into the late 1870s as a transportation route through Virginia. Battery Creek Lock #7, built in the 1840s, and the exhibits along the trail show how lift locks raised and lowered canal boats as they moved through changing elevations.

• Park at the James River Visitor Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway; restrooms, benches, visitor information, and trail access are available there, with some facilities operating seasonally.
• The published distance is 0.4 mile total round trip, not 0.4 mile one way. The mapped corridor from the visitor center to the lock is about 0.22 mile one way.
• For a longer outing, the separate 0.4-mile Trail of Trees and the 3.5-mile Otter Creek Trail are nearby options; do not follow their branches as part of this trail.

The 39-step staircase is the main physical obstacle and prevents a fully step-free route. Concrete and natural surfaces may be slick after rain, and the bridge and river corridor require ordinary care around wet or high-water conditions.
