Perched at Milepost 376.7, Tanbark Ridge Overlook is one of the Parkway’s quickest wins near Asheville—pull in, step out, and you’re staring at layered ridgelines without breaking a sweat. It sits around 3,175 feet and feels like a natural pause button on the drive.

What You’ll See

Expect wide-ranging views over rolling, forested mountains, with the Swannanoa Valley and, on clear leaf-off days, glimpses toward Asheville. On especially clear days you can pick out the Black Mountains and the Great Craggy Mountains on the horizon. Fall color can be fantastic, and the skies often put on a show at daybreak and late afternoon.

Why Stop Here

It’s close to town but feels miles away, making it a perfect leg-stretcher or photo stop on a Blue Ridge cruise. Photographers like the soft morning and late-day light; in winter and early spring you may catch those subtle city-in-the-mountains views that many overlooks don’t offer.

Logistics & Amenities

This is a straightforward roadside pullout with a small paved parking area—nothing more. There are no restrooms, water, or picnic tables. If you need facilities, the Folk Art Center (about 4 miles south on the Parkway) is your best bet. Expect some road noise during peak drive times.

Wildlife

Wildlife is hit-or-miss at roadside overlooks, but you may spot hawks and songbirds riding the thermals, white-tailed deer, and the occasional wild turkey. Butterflies are common in summer. A few visitors report bear sightings—always observe from a distance and never feed wildlife.

Best Time to Visit

• Weekdays or early mornings are the calmest; weekends and peak leaf season see the small lot fill fast.
• Light is best shortly after sunrise and in late afternoon. For sunrise, the sun often clears the ridge a bit after the posted time, which can actually help the photos.
• Clear winter days offer the longest sightlines; fall brings color and heavier crowds.

You’re on the Tanbark Ridge stretch of the Parkway; the Tanbark Ridge Tunnel lies nearby. The Mountains-to-Sea Trail crosses the Parkway in this area (not from the overlook itself) if you want to tack on a walk.
