Pros & cons
PROS
- Quick, choose-your-length forest hike minutes from Asheville
- Well-built MST tread with bridges and fenced switchbacks in spots
CONS
- Parallels the Parkway—expect road noise and limited solitude
- Views are minimal; the best overlook is on the road, not the trail
Small gravel lot at Craven Gap on the Blue Ridge Parkway where it meets Town Mountain Road, with limited roadside pull-offs; no restrooms or water.
Trail parallels the Parkway and has a few confusing junctions—follow white MST blazes. Bears are active. Parkway may close seasonally; use Town Mountain Road for access. No water or restrooms.
Craven Gap is a popular, woodsy slice of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) right where the Blue Ridge Parkway meets Town Mountain Road, minutes from Asheville. Expect a social, close-to-town hike through lush forest with frequent glimpses of the Parkway and a bit of road noise—this is more about green tunnel vibes than big vistas. Fun fact: a sitting U.S. president (Barack Obama) hiked here.
Route options and distance
The most common outing heads north from Craven Gap to Ox Creek Road/Bull Gap and back—about 4.0 miles total (roughly 2.0 miles each way). You can also head south toward Haw Creek Valley Overlook (about 2.9 miles one way from the gap). Views are mostly filtered; the actual overlook is on the Parkway itself. Pick your distance and turn around as you like—this corridor is truly choose-your-length.
What the trail is like
The MST here is a well-maintained, natural-surface singletrack with roots, rocks, and a few short stair sections near the trailheads. It rolls gently with modest total gain (on the order of a few hundred feet for the 4-mile out-and-back). You’ll follow white circular MST blazes and pass bits of thoughtful trail work—short fenced switchbacks and a sturdy footbridge on the northbound stretch—while the Parkway often parallels through the trees. Spring wildflowers are a highlight; in leaf-off seasons you’ll catch more ridge-and-valley peeks.
Crowds, pets, and wildlife
Because it’s so close to town, you’ll see walkers, runners, families, and leashed dogs. Black bears are reported in the area—make noise, give wildlife space, and keep food secured. Dogs must be leashed per National Park Service rules.
Best time to hike
This is a year-round option when roads allow. Spring through early summer brings wildflowers and cool shade; fall has colorful foliage; winter days can offer better glimpses through the trees. Mornings may start foggy and burn off to sun. Weekends fill early—go early or late for easier parking and a quieter feel.
Logistics and tips
Park at the small gravel pull-off at Craven Gap on the Parkway (additional roadside pull-offs nearby). There are no restrooms or water. If the Parkway is closed in winter, you can usually access the gap via Town Mountain Road. Expect some junctions—stay on the MST by following the white dots, and bring a map if you plan to go beyond the standard out-and-back.
