Lane Pinnacle Overlook (MP 372.1)

You get an easy-to-read panorama: Lane Pinnacle to the far left, the Swannanoa Mountains to the right, and the Great Craggy Mountains straight ahead. On clear days, sightlines stretch 35+ miles across rolling hardwood and pine forests, sometimes out to Beetree Reservoir and even the Hickory Nut Mountains. Expect dramatic layers and, at times, moody fog and mist that can either add atmosphere or hide the show entirely.

The overlook takes its name from Charles Lane, an early 1800s landowner who established an iron mine on the north slope of Lane Pinnacle. It’s a small window into the region’s 19th‑century ironworking era when iron operations dotted the North Carolina mountains.

Typical Blue Ridge high-country residents roam these forests: songbirds, wild turkey, deer, and occasionally black bear. Bring binoculars if you like scanning distant ridgelines; sightings are hit-or-miss but the habitat is right.
