Waterrock Knob Picnic Area

Overview

Perched near 6,000 feet at Milepost 451.2, Waterrock Knob Picnic Area is the Parkway’s high-elevation picnic stop with serious scenery. The parking loop looks both east and west, so you can watch sunrise or sunset without moving the car. On a clear day you’ll spot layer after layer of the Southern Highlands—Great Balsams, Smokies, Cowees, Nantahalas, Blacks, Craggies, and more.

What Makes It Special

Few pull-in picnic spots pack views this wide. You can literally eat with a panorama in front of you, then step onto the short but steep trail to the summit for an even broader vantage. After dark, the high elevation and low light pollution make this a favorite for stargazing and Milky Way hunting on clear nights.

Facilities & Layout

A parking loop serves the picnic tables clustered around the overlook, with restrooms and a seasonal visitor center in the same complex. Expect vault toilets and a limited number of tables—front‑row seats go fast at golden hour. Potable water is generally tied to visitor center operating hours; plan to bring your own.

The Hike From Here

The Waterrock Knob Trail leaves right from the lot. It’s short but feels stout—moderate to strenuous due to grade and rocky sections. Multiple overlooks along the way break up the climb and reward you even if you don’t go all the way.

Wildlife

High-elevation ridgelines here are good for songbirds and raptors on the wing. Deer show up occasionally, and black bear is possible—secure all food and pack out trash to keep wildlife wild.

Best Time to Visit

• Sunrise: Use the east-facing side of the loop; arrive 30–45 minutes early for parking and the best light.
• Sunset: West-facing spots shine; Saturdays in fall are the busiest.
• Weekdays are calmer than weekends; clear, moonless nights are best for stars.
• Even in summer it can be cool or windy up here—layers help.

Planning Tips

• Bring your picnic and plenty of water; there are no concessions on site and water access is limited to visitor center hours.
• If you’re adding the summit, wear shoes with grip—the grade is short but earns its views.
• For photography, plan for both golden hours; the unique east/west setup makes this a twofer spot.
