A small, official Parkway pullout at MP 424.8, Wolf Mountain Overlook is a quick stop with mountain layers in front and an unexpectedly rich botanical scene right behind you. It’s not a developed area—just a place to park, step out, and take in the scenery.

Don’t just face the mountains. Turn around and look across the roadway at the steep rock face—a natural “hanging garden” (also called a vertical seep bog) created by Parkway construction blasting. Moisture-loving mosses, ferns, and wildflowers thrive here, and plant enthusiasts consider it a gem, especially after rains and in the growing season.
The View
You’ll get classic Blue Ridge layers when conditions are clear, but be aware that tree growth has crept into the sightline and can limit the long-range panorama. If it’s not working for you, hop a minute up or down the road to Herrin Knob (MP 424.4) or Rough Butt Bald (MP 425.4) and compare angles.
Wildlife & Plants
This stop draws plant lovers for its diversity on the seep-y rock wall. Casual birdwatching is also pleasant here, and you may spot deer in the surrounding forests. The overlook’s name nods to the days when wolves roamed these mountains.
Logistics
There’s a small roadside parking pullout and nothing more—no restrooms, no tables, no water, no trailhead. Bring what you need and plan your bathroom stops at developed areas.
