Overview

Set on the shore of 47-acre Price Lake in Julian Price Memorial Park (MP 297), Price Lake Boat Rentals is the Parkway’s go-to spot for getting on the water. They rent non-motorized boats—canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards—by the hour. It’s simple, scenic, and very beginner-friendly.

What it’s like on the water

Expect calm paddling with forested shorelines, mirror-like reflections, and distant views that often include Grandfather Mountain. The lake is ringed by a walking path, so you’ll see bits of the lakeshore trail from the water. Breezes are common, but this is an easy, relaxing paddle rather than a workout slog.

Wildlife & quiet

This is a non-motorized lake, which keeps things peaceful and ups your odds of spotting waterfowl, turtles, and songbirds. Keep an eye on the coves and shore edges for deer and other small mammals.

How rentals work

• Hourly, first-come, first-served; no reservations.
• Life jackets are included (children must wear them).
• You can launch your own non-motorized boat; have a PFD for each adult and note the no-boating-before-sunrise/after-sunset rule.

Make a day of it

Pair your paddle with the easy Price Lake loop hike and a picnic—tables and picnic areas are scattered around the park. Fishing is a common activity on the lake, too.

A bit of background

Price Lake is man-made, created by damming a stream as part of Julian Price’s mid-20th-century vision for the property. The surrounding parkland was donated to the National Park Service and developed for public recreation soon after.

Best time to visit

• Weekday mornings for the fewest waits; weekends and holidays can mean lines.
• Summer is prime for paddling; fall foliage adds extra wow.
• Aim for early or late-day light for the prettiest reflections and softer photos—but remember boats aren’t allowed before sunrise or after sunset.
• Winter weather can close sections of the Parkway, which affects access and operations.
