Mesa Arch Trail

Overview

If you want maximum payoff for minimal effort, this is it. Mesa Arch Trail is a short 0.5–0.7 mile total loop in the Island in the Sky district that serves up a jaw-dropping window over Buck Canyon and the White Rim with the La Sal Mountains often floating in the distance. Elevation gain is gentle (roughly 56–80 feet), and most visitors finish in 15–30 minutes—longer if you’re waiting your turn for that classic photo.

Trail Experience

The loop leaves the well-marked Mesa Arch Parking Area and meanders on packed dirt and slickrock through low juniper before rounding a small rise to the rim. The arch sits right on the edge of a 500-foot cliff, forming part of a larger 1,200-foot drop into Buck Canyon. It’s unfenced, so keep a tight grip on your situational awareness (and your kids). The path is easy overall but includes rocky, narrow sections and short stone steps—not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.

Face the arch and look left: you can often pick out Washer Woman Arch in the distance. The arch frames a “keyhole” panorama across White Rim country, and on clear days the La Sals stack up perfectly beyond it. Stay on the signed trail to protect the fragile cryptobiotic soil—those dark, crusty patches are living communities that hold the desert together.

Best Times to Hike

This loop is hikeable year-round. Sunrise is the showstopper: the underside of the arch glows and the view layers beautifully—also when it’s most crowded. Arrive well before dawn if you want a front-row tripod spot, or come late afternoon/near sunset for softer light with smaller crowds (though the glow effect is a sunrise thing). In winter, expect snow or ice and bring traction if conditions are slick.

Tips and Photography

The lot is small and fills early, especially at sunrise. Wear good shoes for the uneven rock, bring water and sun protection (there’s little shade), and keep your group behind the rim. Climbing on the arch is prohibited. For photos, a low position on the arch’s left side or the nearby rock outcrop often lines up the arch, White Rim, and La Sals in a single, clean composition.

Beginners, families, and anyone chasing an iconic view without a big climb. If crowds turn you off, time it off-peak or be patient—the view is worth sharing for a few minutes.
