Freshwater Lake Look-off is a short, steep out-and-back from Cabot Trail, across from the Ingonish Visitor Centre. The complete return is 0.3 km (0.2 mi); allow about 10 minutes. It suits a quick stop for a viewpoint rather than a longer hike: at the top, Freshwater Lake, Ingonish Beach, Middle Head and Cape Smokey spread out in one sweep. This is the lookout climb, not the separate lake-level Freshwater Lake loop.

Most of the rise is on steps, with short rocky or rooted patches between them. The trail gains height quickly, so the distance understates the effort; skip it if stairs are difficult. Walk up to the lookout and return the same way to complete the round trip. Dogs are allowed on leash in the park.

A wooded island in Freshwater Lake makes a clear foreground, with South Bay Ingonish and the Atlantic opening beyond it and Cape Smokey on the horizon. Ingonish Beach and Middle Head are also in the view. Parks Canada advises care at the top, especially with children. If you want a gentler walk, the separate 1.7 km Freshwater Lake loop at the Ingonish Beach day-use area is compacted fine gravel and wheelchair accessible.
