A mellow shoreline walk beside a former ocean bay, Freshwater Lake Trail is about the easiest win on the Ingonish side. It’s essentially flat (0–50 ft of rise), wheelchair‑accessible, and perfect for a leg‑stretch with kids, strollers, or multigenerational groups. The route is an out‑and‑back totaling 1.7 km/1.1 mi and typically takes 30–40 minutes.
What you’ll see
The path tracks the lake’s edge with big sky reflections and a chance to hear or spot loons from a viewing deck. A short side spur leads to the cobble barrier beach that seals the lake off from the Atlantic—great for surf sounds and geology gawking. Many people cap the walk with a dip: the lake is usually calmer and warmer than the ocean, but both are options.
Variations
Want a tad more? You can make a longer loop (about 2.4 km/1.5 mi) by including Beach Road, though parts of that variant follow pavement and feel less wild. If it’s views you’re after, pair this with the nearby Freshwater Lake Look‑off for a short, steep vista hit over Ingonish Beach and Cape Smokey.

The main lakeside path is level and wheelchair‑friendly. Bicycles are permitted; riders must yield to pedestrians. Surfaces can include some rocks and roots, so hybrids or mountain bikes are better than skinny road tires.

Trailhead parking is at the Ingonish Beach Day Use Area, with washrooms and picnic facilities nearby in season. A park pass is required. Pets are allowed but must be leashed. Recreational drones aren’t permitted.
