Pamet Area and Bearberry Hill“You're approaching the Pamet Area trail access, where I'd choose Bearberry Hill for two quite different views. Allow forty-five minutes to an hour, with steep grades, log steps and sandy footing near the overlooks.”

Guide
Bearberry Hill Overlooks are a pair of summit viewpoints on the Pamet Area Trails in Truro. The East Summit looks toward Ballston Beach and the Atlantic; the West Summit looks down over a cranberry bog and pond. Do both if you can—the views are different, and the hike is the point. The Bearberry Hill out-and-back is about 1.2 miles total, with a solid trail, log steps, and a steep grade.
The East Summit opens toward the sandy shore and ocean. From the West Summit, look down across the pond and former cranberry bog toward the Bog House. For a photo, keep some of the scrubby hillside in the foreground: it makes the drop from hill to beach or valley easier to read.
The Pamet River valley was shaped by glaciers. The bog below the West Summit belongs to a later chapter, when cranberries were harvested commercially here. The Bog House is an 1830s building down in the valley, restored by Friends of Cape Cod National Seashore; it is a separate destination, not a structure on the summit.
Bearberry is a low, evergreen shrub in the heath family. Its red berries also earned it the name “hog cranberry.” Look for the small, hardy plants among the hill’s pitch pines, oaks, and bayberry rather than expecting a forested summit.
Start from the parking area beside the Environmental Education Center at 111 North Pamet Road. The NPS route begins near the center; the wider Pamet trail system and cranberry-bog spurs add mileage, so follow the Bearberry Hill route if the overlooks are your goal. There are no restrooms on the trails, and pets aren’t allowed.
