Guide
Newcomb Hollow Beach is a town-managed stretch of Atlantic shore in northern Wellfleet, backed by steep dunes. Broad sand and active surf make it a good stop for a beach walk, watching waves, or surfing when conditions suit; it is a poor pick if you want reliably calm water. Visitors describe the dune descent as more manageable than nearby White Crest, though it is still a loose-sand climb down and back.
The town access is on Gross Hill Road near 1175 Gross Hill Road. Wellfleet’s town-beach parking is generally permit or fee controlled from the third weekend in June through Labor Day; check the current rules before driving over, since the exact terms can change. The beach is town-managed, even though it sits within the National Seashore area. Restrooms are reported at the town beach access, though their type and seasonal schedule were not confirmed.
The dunes and beach are part of Cape Cod’s glacial coast. Waves erode the old sediment and move sand alongshore, while onshore wind piles sand into dunes; this is a changing coast, not a fixed line between land and sea. For a photo, frame the surf along the foot of the bluff so the water and dune lead the eye down the shore.
In January 2008, a schooner’s lower hull washed up on this beach. Researchers identified it as part of a mid-to-late-19th-century vessel and left it where it landed, expecting the sea to reclaim it. It was a short-lived find, not a permanent exhibit, so don’t plan on seeing wreckage today.
Visitors have reported seals here, and a few have seen whales; treat either as a lucky sighting rather than part of the visit. The ocean surf can be powerful, so this is a better fit for people who enjoy waves and open shore than for anyone counting on calm swimming.
