Duck Harbor Beach is a town-managed shoreline on Cape Cod Bay near Griffin Island in Wellfleet. Its open western horizon makes sunset the clearest reason to come. The edge is rocky, so this suits a walk and some beachcombing better than a soft-sand setup. For a photo, keep the pebbles in the foreground and leave room for the water.
This is a rock-and-pebble beach, and the uneven edge can be rough on bare feet; water shoes make walking easier. Rock hunting is a better bet than counting on shells or driftwood, which vary along the shore.
Storm water has shifted this low coastal landscape among marsh, open water and woodland over time. Researchers have cored layers of peat, sand, clay and shell here to trace those changes, work that can also inform restoration of the nearby Herring River. The shifting land and vegetation are part of what makes this stretch different from a broad run of open sand.
