Great Island Trail

Great Island Trail crosses a sandy peninsula between Cape Cod Bay and Wellfleet Harbor, through pitch-pine forest and along salt-marsh edges. This route is the 3.9-mile round trip from Great Island parking by the colonial tavern site and back. A longer 8.8-mile round trip continues toward Jeremy Point, but that is a much bigger, tide-exposed outing. I’d choose the Tavern Loop for most hikers: you get the island’s mix of woods, marsh and history without spending hours on the exposed southern beach. Allow about three hours for this route; the longer outing can take most of the three to five hours the park suggests for exploring Great Island.

The trail is mostly soft sand, with occasional log steps and little sustained climbing. The sand makes the distance feel longer than it looks, and some stretches have little shade. Bring drinking water; there is no water source along the trail. If you want an easy stroll, this is not the Cape Cod walk to pick. If you’re comfortable with a sandy half day, the changing views make the effort worthwhile.

From the parking area, the path leaves the road and winds through pitch pines before opening onto sandy rises and marsh-side views. The Tavern Loop branches around the historic site, then returns toward the lot. The open views come in breaks through the trees, rather than as one long panorama. There are worn beach cuts and marsh-side paths near some junctions, and visitors sometimes lose the main tread; follow the marked route instead of taking the first sandy path to the water.

The Wellfleet Tavern Site is also called the Samuel Smith Tavern Site. Archaeologists excavated it in 1969 and 1970, and artifacts point to activity from about 1690 to 1740. Drinking vessels, pipe stems and glassware helped identify it as a tavern. There are no standing walls or visible ruins, so the interest is in the story of a busy colonial stop on this otherwise quiet island, not in looking for a building.

The higher sandy ground gives you occasional views across the harbor, bay and salt marsh. When the trail opens toward water, frame the sandy tread with the marsh and bay beyond it; the pine branches make a useful foreground and show how quickly the route moves from woods to shore. The tavern site itself is a history stop, not a viewpoint.

The 8.8-mile round trip to Jeremy Point includes the Tavern Loop and continues much farther south. The land beyond Great Beach Hill is submerged except at the lowest tides, so the return can be cut off by water. Do not set out on that extension without checking tide timing and posted conditions; never force a crossing. Treat it as a separate, longer option rather than an automatic add-on to the 3.9-mile walk.

Park at the Great Island Trail lot where Griffin Island and Chequessett Neck roads meet. The picnic area and portable toilets are beside the lot. Dogs are permitted only on the signed first half mile, not on the full Tavern Loop. Seasonal shorebird closures can also change which beach sections are accessible, so follow the posted signs.
