Guide
Long Pond Beach is a small Town of Wellfleet beach at the northwest corner of a 38-acre kettle pond. It is a simple stop for freshwater swimming, fishing or a cartop-boat outing, with sand and grass at the shore and a wooded bank across the water. During the summer swimming season, a Wellfleet beach sticker is required. Visitor eligibility is limited, so check the Town’s current rules before planning a swim.
The beach is off Long Pond Road, with a large gravel parking lot across the road. A path leads down to the water; cartop boats need to be carried down it.
Wellfleet’s kettle ponds were left by melting glacial deposits about 15,000 years ago. Long Pond has two deep bowls joined by a narrow, shallow section. It averages 16 feet deep and reaches 50 feet; most of the bottom is sand and gravel, and the water is typically transparent to about 20 feet.
The pond is also used for fishing and boating. Fish recorded here include chain pickerel, redfin pickerel, yellow perch, pumpkinseed and brown bullhead; treat them as pond species, not a promise of a catch. For a photo, keep the sandy shallows in the foreground and the tree-lined far bank behind them to show the pond’s clear water and setting.
