Buxton British Cemetery is a fenced, two-grave memorial on Lighthouse Road, just past Buxton Woods Picnic Area near Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Tall pines and cedars shade the plot from the road, and a short path leads to the white picket fence and graves. It’s a focused stop for anyone interested in the Outer Banks’ World War II history, not a large cemetery or museum. The visit is brief, but the story puts the danger at sea in a very human place.

During the first half of 1942, German U-boats attacked shipping off the North Carolina coast. Oil, wreckage and bodies washed onto nearby beaches. Two foreign sailors from that period are buried here. Local accounts identify one as Fourth Engineer Officer Michael Cairns of the British-armed tanker San Delfino; the other remains unknown. The San Delfino was sunk off Hatteras in April 1942. The cemetery is the focus of an annual remembrance ceremony, connecting the two graves to the wider wartime story along this coast. The stop is small, but the names and the unknown sailor make the history personal.

Drive past the lighthouse parking area and watch for a small roadside pull-off and sign; a short shaded path leads from the road to the graves. An interpretive panel adds context, and parking is available at the stop. There’s no long walk to plan for, but the exact path distance and surface aren’t specified. Give it a few minutes, read the panel, and leave the graves undisturbed.
