Lobo Canyon Trail

Plan on about 9.6 miles round trip from the pier to the canyon mouth. Most hikers should allow roughly 5–7 hours, depending on pace and stops. The route is strenuous because of its length, remote setting, exposed roads, uneven trail, and elevation changes. The stored line follows the 4.745-mile one-way corridor once; the visitor distance includes the return.

The route leaves Bechers Bay across open island grasslands on Smith Highway before entering Lobo Canyon Trail. Inside the canyon, the route follows the stream corridor between sandstone walls to a secluded beach at the mouth. Expect coastal views, oak and riparian vegetation, seasonal wildflowers, and opportunities to see seabirds, harbor seals, California sea lions, and island foxes near the ranch and camp areas.

This is a remote island route with long stretches of firm dirt road and narrower, sometimes sandy or brushy trail. Wind and sun exposure can be significant, and the canyon may include damp or uneven footing. Poison oak, jumping cholla, and ticks occur on the island; cliff edges and coastal bluffs can be crumbly and unstable. Travel is restricted to signed/on-trail routes between the mouth of Lobo Canyon and Cow Canyon to protect sensitive resources.

Access is by boat or plane; there is no public road access to Santa Rosa Island. Water is available near the ranch and Water Canyon Campground, but hikers should carry enough for the full route because there is no dependable potable-water stop along the hike. The ranch buildings are closed except for escorted tours. Do not hike alone, keep food and trash secured, give wildlife space, and meet the concessionaire departure time. Do not smoke on trails or in brush; smoking is allowed only on beaches. Stay on signed routes and avoid animal trails and unstable cliff edges.
