Wise Lake is a small lake in Congaree National Park’s floodplain, a former channel of the Congaree River. It makes a quiet detour if you’re already walking the Weston Lake Loop or paddling Cedar Creek. From the Boardwalk Loop, the described foot route is about 0.6 mile to the River Trail junction, then roughly 100 meters along a signed spur to the lake. That’s one way, so the spur is short but the visit takes a longer walk to reach.
The lake is surrounded by old-growth forest. From the shore, the water and closely spaced trees are the whole show; on a calm day, the trunks and leafy canopy reflect across the surface. For a photo, keep some water beneath the trees so the reflections show how tightly the forest frames the lake.
