The Pinnacles Trail

The Pinnacles Trail is an easy, wide gravel path along a canyon rim, with pale volcanic spires rising from the slope below. Follow it from the end of Pinnacles Road to the park boundary and return the same way: about 1.6 miles round trip, with the mapped corridor about 0.8 mile one way. Allow 30–45 minutes with stops. This is a short walk for unusual geology, not a summit hike.

Distance descriptions vary: some give 0.8 mile for the outing, while the full boundary route is longer. This guide follows the complete walk to the boundary and counts the return; turn back sooner if you want a shorter look.

The broad path is mostly gentle and trends downhill toward the boundary; the return climbs the same corridor. It stays in forest above the canyon and opens onto several views of the spires. The route ends at the park boundary rather than a loop junction, so retrace your steps. The canyon edge is exposed in places, and the columns sit below the rim.

For a photo, leave some of the pine-covered rim in the frame with a spire. It gives the narrow rock towers a sense of scale, and a few steps along the trail change how the rows line up.

The needle-like columns are fossil fumaroles: old gas vents preserved as rock. Hot ash and pumice hardened around escaping gases; erosion later wore away the softer deposits, leaving the chimneys standing above the canyon floor. Look from more than one viewpoint—the rows and gaps shift as you move.
