Overview

About Dinorwig Slate Quarry

Why stop

  • Industrial ruins, slate textures, and old inclines reward slow exploring
  • Wide views over Llyn Padarn, Llyn Peris, and Dolbadarn Castle

Heads up

  • Steep, loose footing and exposed mountain weather
  • Restricted land and hazards limit where you can wander
This is the working hillside itself, a historical industrial landscape cut into the mountainside above Llanberis in Eryri. Slate was worked here from 1787 to 1969, and at its height this was the second-largest slate quarry in the world. The site sits within the Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales World Heritage Site, so what you walk through is the actual evidence of that industry rather than a display about it.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Go in daylight, and allow enough of it to walk back out comfortably. Clear, dry mornings give the best views and the most secure footing, and earlier visits tend to be quieter at the Llanberis parking areas. Weather here changes quickly, so bring sturdy grippy footwear, waterproofs, a warm layer and water.

Access and parking

  • Upper Dinorwig approach: narrow, steep lanes lead up, with limited parking near the quarry entrance. From there the walk out to a viewpoint can be short and fairly level.
  • Llanberis and Padarn Country Park approach: woodland paths, steep and uneven slate steps, a zig-zag path and an old metal bridge, which adds a real uphill walk.
  • Parking is available around the upper approach and around Llanberis and Padarn Country Park, with paid options around Llanberis.
  • Terrain is steep, rocky and uneven in many places. Do not assume all sections are accessible, and choose your approach to match what you are comfortable walking.

The former workshops at the foot of the hill are the separate National Slate Museum, and Vivian Quarry is its own smaller site. Up here you are on the quarry terraces themselves, so bring what you need for an outdoor walk rather than expecting to pick things up along the way.

  • More than 30 galleries and terraces, linked by slate tips and the remains of inclined railway systems.
  • Ruined quarry buildings and structures, including the row of quarrymen's housing known as Anglesey Barracks.
  • Long views over Llyn Padarn and Llyn Peris, across to Dolbadarn Castle and the surrounding peaks.
  • Walking, looking and photographing. This is a place to read the shape of the hillside rather than follow a set trail.
Safety and respecting the siteThe heritage authority describes this landscape as remote, dangerous and challenging.

The heritage authority describes this landscape as remote, dangerous and challenging. It is partly privately owned and includes land with no public access.

  • Stay on public paths and obey signs and gates.
  • Never climb fences or enter buildings, tunnels or quarry workings.
  • Steep drops and hazards around water-filled workings, derelict structures and inclines require care, especially with children or dogs.

There is no set route to follow, so navigation is on you and it is easy to misjudge how far you have walked. The lanes on the upper approach are tight, and parking near the entrance is limited, so arriving later in the day may mean rethinking your plan. Cloud can strip the views entirely, and wet slate is slippery.
