Zumsteins: Cottages, River and Fish Falls

Overview

About Fish Falls

Why stop

  • Terraced cascades and dark rock make memorable close-up photos
  • Quieter river walk than the nearby headline waterfall

Heads up

  • Rocky, uneven route includes crossings and slippery sections
  • Little shade on the approach
Fish Falls is a series of terraced cascades on the MacKenzie River, set in a narrow rocky gorge. It lacks the thunderous wall of nearby MacKenzie Falls, but its low, layered drops, dark rock, and creekside setting feel more intimate. This is worth doing as its own destination, not just treating it as a footnote on the longer river walk.

“You're coming up on Zumsteins, where a short riverside walk takes you through the remains of an old holiday retreat. The historic loop is only about 250 metres, so allow 15 to 30 minutes to wander and read the signs.”

More about Fish Falls

Walk and settingFrom Zumsteins Picnic Area and Historic Area, follow the MacKenzie River Walk to the falls.

From Zumsteins Picnic Area and Historic Area, follow the MacKenzie River Walk to the falls. The return walk is about 4.6 kilometres and usually takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. It is graded as a moderate walk and can include water crossings, rock hopping, scrambling, slippery surfaces, and some steep sections. The route follows the river through eucalypt forest, with tranquil pools, rocky escarpments, and the falls' layered drops along the way.

The falls are also linked to the MacKenzie Falls precinct. That approach includes steep steps and a more strenuous section of river walking, so Zumsteins is the better starting point if Fish Falls is your main goal. Expect a formed bush track rather than a smooth, accessible path right to the water.

Fish Falls flows year-round, but recent rain gives the cascades more presence and makes the surrounding creek more photogenic. Spring is a good balance of flowing water, wildflowers, and comfortable walking weather. Early morning is your best bet for a quieter visit; late afternoon can bring warm light to the rock, while overcast weather gives more even exposure in the gorge. Wedge-tailed eagles may circle above the river valley, and ordinary bush birdlife is most noticeable when the track is quiet.

Keep well back from fast water and wet edges, and do not climb the cascades. Carry drinking water, sun protection, and sturdy shoes with good grip. There is little shade on parts of the route, and the rocks can be slick after rain.

Practical notesThe useful parking and public toilets are at the Zumsteins access area, not beside the falls.

The useful parking and public toilets are at the Zumsteins access area, not beside the falls. Picnic tables and barbecue facilities are also available at Zumsteins, making it easy to eat before or after the walk. Dogs are not permitted in the national park. Fish Falls is a rewarding quieter companion to MacKenzie Falls, but it is not a drive-up stop, and the walk is a poor fit for anyone looking for level or fully accessible terrain.
