“You're coming up on MacKenzie Falls, and this is a stop I'd make time for, even if a steep walk isn't for you. The falls flow all year, dropping over dark rock into a deep pool and sending spray through the gorge.”

From the car park the path runs through stringybark forest, crossing a small gully on a bridge before reaching the elevated lookout platform above MacKenzie Falls. Taking the right-hand fork on the way out works well, then returning on the alternate fork to close the loop. The payoff is the broad view rather than a close approach: the MacKenzie River drops over a sandstone cliff into a deep pool below, and the platform sits high enough to take in the whole gorge.

Difficulty and footingEasy, about 2 out of 10.

Easy, about 2 out of 10. The named sections are asphalt or concrete with clear sightlines and gentle grades. Elevation samples along the loop sit within roughly a 42 m range, so there are mild rises rather than climbs. The surface and the bridge are reported as suitable for prams and some wheelchairs, though anyone with specific access needs should judge the gradients for themselves rather than assume the whole loop is barrier free.

Twisted stringybark, blackwood and other eucalypts, with grass trees through the understorey and wildflowers in spring. Wallabies are seen along the path fairly often in the evening, so keep your distance and stay quiet if you meet one.

Dogs are not permitted in the park, with assistance dogs the exception and subject to entry requirements. No camping, fires, horses, fishing, bicycles, firearms, generators or motorised vehicles on the restricted paths. Falling limbs and trees are an ongoing risk in this forest, so avoid lingering under large old trees in wind.

This is the lookout walk, not the separate descent to the base of the falls, which is around 2 km and much steeper with long flights of stairs. If you want more viewpoints without the stairs, Broken Falls and Cranages lookouts are close by.
